Special Programs

Partnerships with the YMCA Wilmington

Gulf Avenue Elementary School is proud to partner with the YMCA Wilmington to provide swimming lessons to the students of Gulf Avenue Elementary School.

Learning to swim is great exercise and might save your child's life one day.  Students are taught the basics of water safety all the way through competitive swimming and is currently funded through grants from Phillips 66 Refinery in Wilmington and our Parent Teacher Organization.

Angels Gate Cultural Center

Angels Gate Cultural Center teams up with Gulf Avenue Elementary School to provide Creative Writing for our 5th Grade Classes as well as a Fine Arts program for our 3rd Grade Students as well.  The students explore music and their imaginations as they absorb a well rounded education that ensures that our students our successful in the classroom and in life.

Meet the Music

Building Musical and Cultural Literacy

Grand Vision’s Meet the Music (MTM) programs for students ensure equitable access to the arts through partnerships with local elementary schools who lack music education. Through inspirational live music concerts and sequential standards-based instruction with trained teaching artists, Meet the Music builds the foundation and inspiration students need to make and enjoy music for the rest of their lives, while bringing teachers essential tools for integrating arts learning into the classroom.

Meet the Music’s program pipeline includes RoMP (Roots of Music Program) for 4th grade, Recorders in Schools for 5th grade, and the LA Opera Partnership for 4th and 5th grade. In 2016-17 Meet the Music’s eight partner LAUSD schools in San Pedro and Wilmington include Barton Hill Elementary, Cabrillo Ave. Elementary, George de la Torre Elementary, Gulf Ave. Elementary, Hawaiian Ave. Elementary, Harry Bridges Span School, Leland Street Elementary, and Pt. Fermin Marine and Science Magnet.
